Like every time he returns home, he forgets that, when he returns, heroes weren’t made to live in the real world. There are consequences that come with virtue, a price to be paid if you want to live by the knight’s code.
It’s not unusual for him to forget that he’s nothing more than a showpiece in the heart of New York. He has a purpose overseas, in his hometown, but here he’s only meant to be a symbol…not an instrument of righteousness.
He forgets, too easily and too often, but when she emerges from the plane he remembers by the shrill, panicked sound of her scream.
“…LANCE!!”
He remembers, as she runs to him, that half his face is now purple and green courtesy of the beating he took at the bar his first night home. He tries to explain to her that a drunk in the corner had smacked his girlfriend while he was out with some guys from the station, that he went against three guys alone so his married buddies wouldn’t get hurt, but she doesn’t listen as she touches his swollen lower lip and the gash marring his forehead.
He can’t bring himself to tell her that, in the heat of the moment, he forgot he was just like his married friends now: he forgot that he had someone else besides his dog at home to worry about him.
She reminds him with a stream of curses unbecoming of a lady that don’t stop until Arthur finally disembarks, with soft kisses feathering over his bruised flesh and blistering glares that burn against his battered skin. She reminds him, with her rage and her affection, that heroes weren’t made to live in the real world. There are consequences that come with virtue, a price to be paid by those who live by the knight’s code.
She reminds him of the one thing he has never forgotten: whatever the price, it’s one worth paying.
